Susan Roces said she is happy to be working for the Kapamilya network again as the domineering matriarch Adelina in the new soap Muling Buksan ang Puso. The veteran actress said she is also happy to be working with talented fast-rising drama princess Julia Montes. In the soap, she plays protective grandmother to Enrique Gil.
“I’ve worked with Julia in Walang Hanggan. It was very memorable. Masarap si Julia katrabaho katulad din ng mga fellow actors niya sa ABS-CBN, very professional sila. Now I’m working with Enchong Dee and Enrique Gil for the first time. Maganda, maayos ang trabaho namin. Seryoso sila sa kanilang trabaho. Nakaka-inspire at malaking bagay para sa kapwa artista na seryoso ang mga ka-eksena. Kaya napapaganda mabuti ang mga scenes,” she admitted.
Susan said she feels flattered by Julia's statement to the media that she was the latter’s inspiration when it comes to acting. Susan said she is proud of how far Julia has come in the industry ever since she started out as a child star. The 72-year-old actress said she can relate to Julia's experience of working early in life. “Siyempre kasi hindi nalalayo sa mga pangyayari sa buhay ni Julia nag buhay ko. Ako nagsimula rin nung batang bata pa ako. I was 16 when I started and when I did Walang Hanggan, I met Julia at hangang-hanga ako sa kanya dahil napakabata pa niya pero nag-celebrate siya ng birthday niya sa kauna-unahang bahay na sariling sikap niyang ipinagawa. Mababait ang mga co-stars ko na miyembro ng network na ito. Habang katrabaho ko sila, naalala ko yung pagsisimula ko sa Sampaguita pictures as a teenager. Ngayon, ako naman ang gumagabay sa knaila, sila naman ang ginu-groom natin for bigger roles, for greater days ahead of them and I feel very honored to be part of that,” she explained.
Unlike her other roles wherein she played good characters, Susan said Adelina is a bit more complicated to portray because of her colorful past. Susan admitted she can even relate to some apsects of her role. “Nagagalak ako na binigyan ako ng pagkakataon. Matagal ko na ring hiniling na sana mabigyan naman ako ng ibang personalidad na ipo-portray. Salamat naman at nakaisip sila na bigyan ng kasagutan ang aking kahilingan. I’m portraying Adelina. Si Adelina ay totoong tao. Lahat naman ng tao merong good and bad side, umiiral ang either one of the sides depende sa pangyayaring nagaganap sa buhay ng isang tao. Sa kasaysayan ni Adelina, dahil sa mga natagong pangyayari sa buhay niya ay umiral ay yung pagiging mapusok niya, straight to the point, matapang, very independent, and bitter. Well of course lahat ng yan ay nababago paglipas ng panahon kaya lumalabas din yung pagiging sweet niya nung nagka-apo na siya. Masayang masaya ako na nabigyan ako ng pagkakataon na ma-portray ang character na katulad nito. Hindi siya naiiba sa aking tunay na character, (laughs)” she said.
After being in the entertainment industry for many decades, Susan said she has definitely grown and matured as an actress. “I lived my career in different stages. When I started, the thrust was to entertain so the type of movies that came my way were mostly for entertainment, musical, comedies. There were times when I would feel very embarrassed later. Well it was fun while I was doing it while I was growing up but growing up I tackled more mature roles, I had the chance to work with Lino Brocka and Celso Ad Castillo so eventually as time passed, I tackled more mature roles so what I can claim is my acting career progresses as I age. I enjoy tremendously the roles I am able to portray now because they are roles I couldn’t be convincing in when I was still young. I have no discomfort in supporting young actors because that was where we started. Now we are supporting young actors the way other actors supported us when we were young,” she said.
With her daughter Grace Poe-Llamanzares topping the recent senatorial elections and her working on Muling Buksan ang Puso, Susan said they both lead very busy lives. “Dahil napaka-busy niya at ang sagot niya sa akin ay busy din naman daw ako sa aking ginagawa (laughs). Kaya masaya ang buhay namin dahil may kanya-kanya kaming careers na dapat tutukan,” she said.
