After finishing his high school studies in O.B. Montessori in Greenhills, Diego Loyzaga, son of Theresa Loyzaga to action star Cesar Montano, is set on pursuing his showbiz career again. He top-billed a Maalaala Mo Kaya episode last May and was recently paired with Julia Barretto in Wansapanataym. This paved the way for him to be Julia’s leading man in ABS-CBN’s upcoming primetime soap, Mirabella, along with Kiko Estrada.
In an interview with Push.com.ph, Diego shared that he’s really grateful to Dreamscape (led by business unit head Deo Endrinal) for giving him another big break. The same business unit also took a chance on him when he was paired with Julia Montes in Mara Clara back in 2010, followed by Growing Up with Kathryn Bernardo in 2011. “Siyempre po happy ako at excited. Bumalik din yung feeling na kaba. Hindi naman dapat maaalis yun. Masaya ako na i-prove sa sarili ko na this time mabigyan ako opportunity to work. Tuwang tuwa ako na kasama ko ngayon sina Julia at Kiko. Before, sina Kathryn, Julia and DJ (Daniel Padilla).”
Asked if he feels pressured to make it big just like what Kathryn and Daniel’s love team did, Diego replied, “Hindi naman po kasi kaibigan ko sila. I’m very happy for them at mabilis nila na-achieve yung status nila ngayon. Pero pressure, hindi naman. We do things differently. Kung gano’n na-achieve nila, it’s our turn naman na ipakita namin kung anong kaya namin at tignan natin kung saan kami mapunta.”
Diego also felt privileged to be paired with Julia who’s dubbed as showbiz’s latest it girl. Apparently, his non-showbiz friends have a huge crush on the teen actress. “I don’t study in Taft pero bumibisita ako run kasi lahat ng high school friends ko nandun, so nag-uusap-usap kami lahat. [Tinatanong ako], ‘Bro, kilala mo si Julia Barretto?’ Ang alam ko kasi yung pinsan ni Kiko crush niya si Julia, eh ka-school ko po siya [dati]. Dun ko nakilala through rumors.”
Soon after his exchange with his friends, Diego got word that he would be working with her for a new soap in the Kapmilya network. “Finally, nung nalaman ko na makakatrabaho ko siya (Julia), sinabi ko, ‘Bro, ‘di ba si Julia yung sinasasabi mo? Katrabaho ko siya.’ ‘Bro, ang swerte mo. Grabe ka.’ On the set tumawag pa yung kaibigan ko sa akin. Pakausap daw kay Julia. So ako naman, ‘Julia, I’m sorry. Please, kausapin mo na.’”
As for his own impression of Julia, Diego admitted that he was equally stunned by her beauty. “Na-[impress] rin ako. Parang, ‘Wow, ang lakas ng dating.’ Pero, hanggang dun lang muna.”
In the meantime, he’s focused on improving his acting skills. In fact, he often meets up with his dad Cesar Montano who personally gives him acting workshops. “Oo, nakapag-workshop na kami. Actually, pinuntahan ko pa siya once sa bahay. Winorskshop niya ako. Naglalaro rin kami ng basketball. Lagi kami magkasama ni dad ngayon. Grabe ang suporta niya sa akin.”
