Currently playing the role of the rebellious and rough Ruben in the popular Primetime Bida series Apoy Sa Dagat, Piolo Pascual said he felt challenged to play a different kind of character for a change. “When it was presented to me, ang first na sinabi sa akin is he’s coming from the province and he had a problem with his father and so dun pa lang, nagrebelde siya and then nung lumaki sila ni Serena (played by Angelica Panganiban),” he said.
The talented actor said the production staff behind Apoy Sa Dagat made sure his character would be a revelation in the story. “Though alam naman namin yung journey ng bawat character I guess mas nagkakaron ka ng space para magkaron ka ng growth din as an artist dahil our production is very much aware of what I’ve done before so as much as possible we try to come up with characters na hindi pa nagagawa ng artista. So if you’re asking why I did this project I guess it’s because I trust my director. I’ve worked with him in Lobo and Lovers in Paris so I guess he knows better kung ano pa kaya kong ibigay at ano pang puwede namin ibigay na atake dun sa gagawin namin. Maganda rin kasi yung nakikita mong nag-grow yung character mo, habang tumatagal nakikilala mo yung character mo. Hindi ako yung tipo ng artista na tipong ito dapat ako kasi hindi ko pa nagagawa. hinahayaan ko siyang mag-evolve, hinahayaan ko siya mag-grow on its own,” he said.
When asked if he would be willing to do a scene in briefs like Patrick Garcia who was part of the pilot week episodes, Piolo explained, “Briefly (laughs). Hindi naman yun yung binibenta natin. Kung kinailangan yun sa storya. Pag kailangan sa storya naman, gagawin namin. So hindi naman yun ang binibenta natin pero pag nangailangan siguro.”
When it comes to his leading lady Angelica Panganiban, Piolo said they have a very comfortable working relationship already which makes it easier to act together, especially during kissing scenes. “Yung pagmamahal namin sa isa’t isa dun sa storya, masarap siyang laruin kasi parang sabay kami lumaki dun sa story so nakita namin yung growth ng isa’t isa. So when it comes to malice siguro, hindi kagaya dun sa iba kong ginagawa na halik halik lang, dito talaga may evolution involved yung relationship nila kaya ini-enjoy ko yung proseso,” he said.
Piolo admitted there is no malice between them anymore. “Hindi naman, sabi nga ni Angelica, we’re portraying a character, hindi naman kami yun eh. Kailangan ihiwalay mo yung sarili mo dun, so minsan nakakalimutan mo kung ano yung ginawa mo kasi nga, ginawa mo yung eksena so hanggang dun na lang. After nun lipat ka na,” he added.
Piolo, who is loveless at the moment, admitted he is not in any rush to change his single status. “Kalma lang, darating tayo diyan,” he said with a smile. The Kapamilya hunk admitted he even spent Valentine’s day at home. “Pumunta lang yung mommy ko sa bahay. Tinext ako ng kapatid ko eh. Sabi niya, ‘Hindi mo ba babatiin si mommy ng valentines?’ So sabi ko sa mom ko, ‘Gusto mo dinner tayo?’ Dun lang kami nag-dinner sa bahay tapos natulog na. Ang saya di ba? (laughs). Bahay lang,” he said. But aside from sending his mom flowers, he also reportedly sent another bouquet to co-star Angelica.
