John Prats says he got so inspired by his first indie film 'Sitio' that he is considering producing indie projects in the future.
John Prats said he is happy to be part of the psychological thriller Sitio, an entry to the Cinema One Originals Festival. The movie tells the tale of upper middle class siblings who move to the province to try to live a simpler life. “I got broke in Manila so I brought my two sisters since our parents passed away na
to the sitio which was owned by my dad, so dun kami tumira
and then dun na yung
adventure,” he shared about the plot of the movie.
The 31-year-old actor admitted he was a bit nervous when he started work on his first indie project. “Oo, nakaka-intimidate talaga. I was really nervous I have to be honest. It's not about kung gaano ka na katagal sa industriya, siguro nga matagal na ako pero experience-wise when it comes to indie sobrang baguhan ako. Kasi for the past four years ang mga ginawa ko puro telebisyon tapos nag-ho-host ako, nag-ba-Banana Split ako. So yung last movie ko was Manay Po pa. So ganun na katagal so na-miss ko talaga gumawa ng pelikula kaya parang gutom na gutom ako. First indie movie ko ito so buwis buhay yung ginawa ko talaga dito,” he admitted.
John said he noticed a big difference in doing indie and mainstream movies. “Well first you don't have to please anyone like your market. Parang more on kung anong passion nung director, yung na-visualize niya. So nagiging mas malaya yung actor, weird eh kasi pag gumagawa ka ng pelikulang mainstream kasi may pini-please kang market eh, kailangan kiligin yung mga teenagers, but this time kung anong vision nung director, kung anong storya niya yun ang ginagawa, but you can also suggest tapos parang working with my co-actors ko iba eh, sila mga galing teatro, pagdating nila alam nila yung character nila, walang pagkakapareho,” he explained.
John said he only accepted an indie project this year because he was impressed with director Mes De Guzman's body of work. “Well may regrets na oo sana inagahan ko mag-indie pero hindi rin kasi ang saya nitong first project ko with direk Mes. Kasi nung sinabi sa akin ni direk Mes, actually wala akong knowledge when it comes to indie movies so nung sinabi sa akin, I researched and saw na ang ganda ng mga pelikula niya. Yung Daan Patungo Kalimugtong, Kuwento ni Mabuti, at Diablo ni Carlo Aquino last year, so lalo akong na-pressure pero at the same time na-excite ako kasi yung hinahanap ko sa pelikula, yung passion ko, nandirito,” he said.
On the set, John said there was a good working atmosphere. “Walang special treatment pero one thing's for sure na talagang blessed ako is nakatrabaho ko si direk Mes yung wife niya, yung line producer, kasi sobra niya kaming binusog pag shooting. Masaya lang kami eh. Lahat pantay-pantay. Sabay sabay kami kumakain, naging pamilya kami sa isang linggo na shoot namin,” he admitted.
Because of the experience, John admitted he is now considering producing indie films in the future. “Naiisip ko siya kasi masaya eh. Hindi ko alam eh sobrang happy ako, sobrang high ako right now and hindi ko alam kung sa buong konsepto nung festival, nung Cinema One, nakaka-miss kasi ang tagal kong hindi na-experience na parang ang yabang nung pakiramam kasi alam mong maganda yung pelikula mo, alam mong in good hands ka tapos alam mo rin yung mga kalaban ng pelikula mo magaganda rin so parang makabilang ka dun, makasama mo yung mga artistang yun, sobrang gagaling,” he said.
The Sitio actor admitted that there might be a chance that he and girlfriend Isabel Oli might even star in an indie project together. “Gusto niya gumawa rin. Nung siguro nabahagi ko sa kanya yung story ko gusto niya rin gumawa and direk Mes is really interested in getting her kasi ganun yung mga features na gusto niya eh, yung Pinay na Pinay. Gusto ni direk Mes yun so na-e-excite ako kasi gusto rin ni Liv eh. Ako lang yung medyo hindi ko ma-picture kasi siyempre iba kami pag magkasama parang barkada, pagka pag magka-eksena kami iba rin,” he admitted.
John said everything in his personal life is positive right now. “I'm just so happy now kasi everyone's saying good things, ang positive ng balik sa amin. Hindi ko alam kung anong meron. Nakakatuwa na ganun yung reaction ng mga tao, walang negative,” he said.
