In his first father role, Paulo Avelino admitted he and new child star Raikko Mateo (who plays the title role) are getting along well on the set of their new Primetime Bida show, Honesto. “So far we get along well. Medyo nahihiya pa siya sa akin pero I’m sure ma-be-break yung barrier na yun as we go on with the soap. Excited na rin ako actually maka-eksena siya,” he admitted.
Because of the show, Paulo has decided to open up more about his three-year-old son Ethan with LJ Reyes. “Sa akin naman kasi, hindi rin naman maganda kung yung show mo is about honesty. Well I never lied about it. Hindi ko lang talaga gustong pag-usapan pero bilang pambata at gusto ma-target lahat ng age dito lalong lalo na yung mga bata, isa sa pinaka-importante na trait din na dapat matutunan ng bata ang ipapakita namin dito so ako gusto ko rin naman na makita rin ako ng bata na may natututunan siyang asal sa TV, hindi puro bad roles (laughs),” he said.
Paulo is hopeful that his experience as a real-life dad will benefit him in the show. “Sana, sana. Pero knowing Raikko and how he is mukhang hindi naman,” he said.
The 25-year-old actor said his role is one that undergoes a transformation throughout th series. “Ako dito si Diego Layer, anak ako ni Tito Joel Torre at Angel Aquino dito sa show at kapatid ko na naman si Melissa Ricks. Kumbaga dahil sa kahirapan, lumaki si Diego na nakasanayan kung anong nangyayari sa pamilya nila, lumaki sa kasinungalingan, sa pagnanakaw at dahil sa isang babae, gusto na niya talikuran lahat para sa isang matuwid na buhay,” he explained.
With honesty being the main value being espoused in the show, Paulo admitted he once had to hide the truth from the public. “Nagsinungaling at one point para maprotektuhan yung mga taong minamahal mo,” he added.
The Honesto actor said that it is also not true he turned down a teleserye project because he did not want to work with Angel Locsin. Paulo admitted to having personal problems at the time and is now focusing on his relationship with his son. “At that time siguro napagod din and at that time marami ring problema and dire-diretso rin ako nung time na yun so na-burn out rin so parang hiniling ko na lang muna na magpahinga nung time na yun. Hindi naman dahil ayokong makatrabaho si Angel or ayoko gumawa ng soap pero at that time talaga kumbaga pagod rin siguro and dala na rin ng ibang mga personal na problema. At kaya ko rin tinanggap ang Honesto kasi there’s a bigger picture to it, hindi kailangan porke’t daddy ako. Siguro it’s about time that I show something to people, to kids, the country that I also have a boy, a son para may napapanuod siya at natututunan sa mga ginagawa ko,” he said.
After being part of Walang Hanggan, Paulo admitted that he feels pressure to do even better in Honesto. “May pressure pero para sa akin, more than the pressure I’m really excited to portray a different character, something new. As a dad for a little boy and kumbaga yung journey nun mas lalo akong na-e-excite kung anong mangyayari kung paano naming maipapakita sa mga kababayan natin kung gaano ka-importante ang katapatan,” he said.
