John Lapus admitted that the best thing to happen to him last year was an offer to come back to ABS-CBN. The talented comedian, who got his start in 1992 on the show Showbiz Linggo but then transferred to another network in 2006 admits he was overjoyed by the news.
“To be honest I was quite nervous at first but at the same time I am really overwhelmed because nga since August wala na akong regular work on television. Good thing I was doing the MMFF (Metro Manila Film Fest) movie Si Agimat, Si Enteng at si Ako to make me busy during those months na wala akong regular TV show. Tapos meron akong classes on the side,” he said.
John said the offer he received was very unexpected. “Mabilis eh. It was November lang during the birthday party of my very first boss in the industry, si Deo Endrinal. After graduating college, sa Showbiz Linggo na kaagad ako. During those days supervising producer pa lang siya nun. Ngayon business unit head na. He asked me kung wala na ba akong regular work and gusto kong bumalik sa ABS-CBN so sabi ko, ‘Might as well!’ To be honest I cried that night in his house kasi birthday niya so andun yung mga kaibigan ko. All along, yung mga kaibigan ko, ngayon mga directors at mga boss na, alam na pala nila. Sinabi na pala ni Deo. Late kasi ako dumating nun dahil may pinanggalingan akong party. So pagdating ko alam na pala nila na o-offer-an ako and alam naman nilang tatanggapin ko. So yun medyo naging emotional ako. Umiyak ako ng konti na, ‘This is it na ba?’ But after it I really thought ng matagal pa, ngayon andito na. Nag-storycon na kami last month and then after the storycon nag-pictorial na kaagad at saka look test for the characters. Then first taping ko din nung December,” he said of the new romantic-comedy series Kahit Konting Pagtingin.
The 39-year-old actor said he is ready to go back to the Kapamilya network and looks forward to re-connecting with old colleagues. “The only constant thing in this world is actually change. So you have to be ready for change, you have to embrace change because it’s part of our life and that is why you should always be vigilant, you should be on your toes and be at your best element to welcome change. This is actually a big change not just in my career but sa buhay ng tao. Hindi natin nasasabi na akala natin na lahat ng bagay is permanente, na kung nasaan ka ngayon nagtratrabaho, kung sino ang kasama mo sa buhay, kaibigan mo, nababago pala sila dahil ang tao din nagbabago and at the same time yung career mo ay nababago. So if there’s one lesson that I’ve learned in 2012, it’s to actually embrace change and be ready for it kasi nothing is permanent in this world,” he shared.
Even though he has already started taping for the series, John said he has yet to sign any legal documents formalizing his transfer. “Wala pa rin so inuna ko muna yung storycon. At saka madali naman yung mga kontrata at negotiations dahil Star Magic artist naman ako. Madali lang sila makapag-usap, yung EP nung soap at yung handler ko sa Star Magic,” he said.
John also shared what was the most difficult part of the past year for him. “It was the waiting eh. The waiting is really very difficult. Even if ginagawa ko yung MMFF film nung time na yun, still nag-we-wait ka. Yun yung sinasabi ko na ma-a-anxious ka, kung ano ba ang mangyayari sa akin, o-offer-an ba ako ulit ng GMA? Bibigyan ba ako ng TV5 ng ibang show? Kukunin ba ako ulit ng ABS-CBN after seven years? Six years ako sa GMA pero the year before ako nag-GMA wala na akong trabaho sa ABS-CBN. So anong mangyayari sa akin? Yung waiting na-stress ako ng bongga, binalakubak ako, hair loss, pimples,” he recalled.
John said he is excited to meet the new batch of Kapamilya stars and work with them in various projects. “Now that I’m in ABS-CBN, yung mga hindi ko pa naka-trabaho ha, si Coco Martin kasi naging si Coco Martin siya nasa GMA ako. I would love to work with Coco Martin and sana mapagbigyan naman ako because Star Magic artist siya, yung co-manager naman niya is dati kong manager na si Biboy Arboleda so hopefully mapagbigyan naman tayo sa soap or maybe a movie with Coco hindi ba? Yung iba naman kasi nakatrabaho ko na before ako nag-GMA and I got the chance to work with them in movies or pag nag-ge-guest pa rin ako. Si Bea Alonzo din although nakatrabaho ko na siya bago ako mag-GMA. But I’d love to work with Bea at saka siyempre si John Lloyd (Cruz). Kasi nung lumipat ako medyo alam ko Koolits pa lang siya nun, hindi pa siya actor actor. So I would like to work with him. Nasa wish list ko yan ever since,” he admitted.
