X Factor Philippines finalist Mark Mabasa still couldn’t believe that he got the chance to perform at “Hit Man" David Foster’s concert at The Star Performing Arts Center in Singapore last November 2. He was just there to watch the concert, along with his manager Grace Mendoza, when the Canadian record producer/singer/songwriter chose him to sing before a 3,000-strong audience. “Dinala lang niya (his manager) ako dun para manood ng concert. Pero meron kasi talagang ginagawang act si David na kukuha siya ng singer sa audience. Tapos nagtaas ako ng kamay. Kapal po ng mukha ko (laughs) kasi gusto ko talaga kumanta nung time na yun,” he said during the press con of X Factor Philippines all-star album launch.
When David asked him to sing a song of his own choice, Mark immediately thought of doing “The Last Time.” He didn’t expect though that the international singer would offer to play the piano for him. “Sabi niya, ‘You only have 20 seconds to sing so sing your ass out. What song are you going to sing?’ Sabi ko, ‘I want to sing your song.’ Sabi niya, ‘Wow, that’s how to win my heart.’ Sabi ko, ‘My favorite song is ‘The Last Time.’’ ‘I know that song. You want me to play that for you?’ Tapos nagsigawan yung mga tao. Siya na rin nag-play for me. E usually banda lang tumutugtog for the audience.”
Mark further shared that he was really flattered when David told him that he sings really well. “So umakyat ulit siya ng stage. Sabi ko, ‘Shall I go up?’ Sabi niya, ‘No, no, stay there’. Tapos after two lines, sabi niya, ‘Wow, get up here.’ Umakyat ako ng stage tapos tinapos namin yung song. After the show, sinabi niya, ‘You're good.’ The next day hinahanap daw ako through Tita Grace. Gusto niya akong pakantahin nung second day ng concert niya kaya lang nasa airport na kami nun.”
Grace happens to be the former manager of Charice, which is probably why David got hold of her to inquire about Mark. But when asked if there are plans for him to sing on David’s Asian tour, Mark simply said that Grace is still in talks with David’s camp about it.
