Charo Santos Concio is willing to host 'Maalaala Mo Kaya' for more years to come

092711-charo_main.jpgCharo Santos Concio never really left showbiz despite having established herself in the corporate world, now serving as the president of ABS-CBN Corporation. The veteran actress remained visible on television as host of Maalaala Mo Kaya which is now on its twentieth year on air. To celebrate this remarkable feat, MMK is featuring five heartfelt stories this October top-billed by the finest actors in the industry like Jake Cuenca, John Prats, Ariel Rivera, Vivian Velez, Ricky Davao, and Angel Aquino.

During the twentieth anniversary press conference, Charo shared how hosting MMK became a fulfillment of one of her childhood dreams. “When I was young, movie fan ako. Madami akong inidolong artista. Hanggang ngayon marami pa rin akong mga iniidolong mga talents. Wala pa kaming TV noon pero nakikinig na ako sa transistor radio ng mga programa nina Tiya Dely, Kuya Cesar. Nakikinig ako kung paano nila isinasalaysay ang mga kwento ng ating mga Kapamilya. Hanggang maging artista ako sa programa ni the late Helen Vela, ang Lovingly Yours, Helen. Wala sa aking panaginip na one day ay magho-host ako ng isang similar program.”

She also paid tribute to the hardworking production staff responsible for success of MMK. “I am the host, the conduit. Ako ang nagdadala ng mga magagandang kwento ng ating mga Kapamilya sa audience na ating pinagsisilbihan. But MMK is not all about me. It’s about people who put the show together every single week for the past twenty years.”

In the more than 800 real life-inspired stories told for the past twenty years 0n MMK, Charo remained the face closely associated with the program. When asked if she is still willing to host MMK for the next twenty years, she took some time to think. “Mahirap naman sabihin na for the next twenty years. Buhay pa kaya ako nun? Ha ha ha!

She explained that she is very much willing to still be part of the continuing success of MMK. “I guess TV is a ratings game. As long as the viewers are supportive of the program and the advertisers, why not? Tagapaghatid lang naman ako. Ang talagang bida naman ay ang mga kwento ng mga letter senders na binibigyang-buhay ng magagaling na artista at production staff.”

Both as host of the program and the president of ABS-CBN, Charo gave this commitment to all the loyal viewers of MMK. “We will just continue to look for great stories that will impact the lives of the Filipinos. ‘Yun siguro ang sikreto ng longevity ng MMK. We mirror everything about life, about being a Filipino. Hindi lang ang ating mga kahinaan but also our strengths. We have the survival instinct. We do good in whatever field we chose to be in. Pati ‘yung pagiging masayahin tayo. We always see what’s positive and hopeful about the future.”

Senior reporters during the press conference still could remember the days of Charo as movie actress during the ‘70s and the ‘80s. She was then asked if she is still open to the idea of acting again, especially if it would be her life story to be told for a special presentation of MMK. Charo laughed thinking about how her life would look like on the small screen, but she picked “Slumbook” as the perfect episode title. Charo also couldn’t pick anyone particular from the list of Kapamilya actresses who would best play as her on her biopic. “Hindi ko pa napapagisipan. Ang hirap naman! I might be biased. Kayo, sa palagay ninyo sino?” she said.
