Jake Cuenca on breakup with Melissa Ricks: 'I wish I was a better boyfriend'

091311-jake_main.jpgIn an interview backstage at ASAP last September 11, Jake Cuenca shared that he would watch the premiere episode of ex-girlfriend Melissa Ricks’s teleserye, Nasaan Ka Elisa? “I wish her all the best sa [Nasaan Ka] Elisa? Alam ko ‘yan, manonood ako. Panonoorin ko ‘yan kase alam ko pinaghirapan niya for many months dahil ‘di natuloy hanggang sa natuloy na,” he said. The actor and Melissa were still together when the actress started working on the teleserye.

In response to Melissa’s previous statement that she is not yet open to work with Jake, the actor replied, “Prerogative niya. Ako hindi naman ako namimili ng trabaho. Maybe not now, (maybe) in the future. Marami pang nangyayari, marami pang nagaganap ngayon. But marami na akong nakaaway, nakabati. Napakaliit ng industriya talaga. I would be honored to work with her… It takes time. Nakikita n’yo naman she’d say that but there’s other stuff that she says as well. Kailangan pa niya ng space. She needs space, she needs time alone, she needs to feel all the success of her project, like now. And one day and I pray for it and I’m patiently waiting for it, sana mag-abot kami. Maging magkaibigan kami ulit tanggapin niya ang apology ko. Right now patience is a virtue. Kailangan munang maghintay, kailangan hanapin ang tamang timing. I’m just happy things are going her way.”

When asked if he would congratulate Melissa now that her series has finally aired after several delays, Jake replied, “She knows that already. Hindi na kailangang sabihin. Hindi kami nag-uusap. Sabi ko nga sa E-Live (Entertainment Live), hintayin nila ‘yung araw na makapag-usap kami ulit [at] maging mabuting magkaibigan, pero obviously that time is not right now.”

Jake continued that he was sorry for causing Melissa so much pain when they split. “For all the heartaches, for all the pain I’ve caused her, I’m sorry. I’ve apologized for that so many times already, but siyempre sometimes relationships don’t work. Hindi lahat ng relationships nagwo-work.” However, he said that although they are no longer together, he still prefers to keep mum about the cause of their breakup. “Hindi porke’t break na kami bubuklatin ko na at ididetalye pero definitely we had stuff that didn’t work out,” he said. “Maraming bagay na hindi kami nagtugma.” Still, Jake is hoping that one day, he and Melissa will be friends again.

The actor did not deny that he feels sad that he has caused a lot of hurt to Melissa. “I feel sad because I disappointed her, I feel sad kasi siyempre nakasakit ako ng tao, I feel sad na I didn’t meet her expectations.” Nevertheless, six months after their relationship, Jake said that he has dealt with it and he continues to move on.

If there is a valuable lesson he had learned from his failed relationship, Jake answered that it is loving someone with all your heart. “Sa dalawang taon wala naman akong pinagsisihan. I was so happy [at ‘pag] hindi nag-work out, wala tayong sisisihin. Minahal ko siya, ‘di man nag-work out, minahal ko naman siya ng buong puso at sinuportahan ko naman lahat ng ginawa niya.” He was also admitted that he still has a lot to learn when it comes to relationships.

Jake was also asked to confirm reports that he allegedly initiated the breakup. “Sinabi ko na hindi ko na idi-detalye pero marami akong pagkakamali,” he replied. “Sinabi ko na marami pa akong dapat matutunan. Sorry. I wish I was a better boyfriend. Para one day ‘pag sapat na ang mga experience ko sa mga bagay-bagay, balang araw magiging mabuting boyfriend ako. Bata pa naman kaming dalawa, we have s
