Eugene Domingo admits she chooses her roles

072011-eugene_main.jpgHaving done a number of successful movies, Eugene Domingo said that she carefully chooses the roles that are offered to her. “As much as possible [I choose the roles that I play]. I enjoy that privilege of choosing the script and having the option to choose the roles I want to play,” she said. She also said that it largely depends on quality of the material.

The versatile actress related that no matter how good an actor is, a poor script will still compromise the quality of a movie. “My base is always the script because the actors can only do so much. Siguro kahit tumabling ako dyan hanggang EDSA hanggang madaling araw, kung hindi naman nakakatawa ‘yung script wala tayong magagawa,” she pointed out. “Medyo nakakatawa pero ang pagiging nakakatawa ay may substance din.” This is also the reason why she loves to work with Joey Reyes, who pens quality scripts. Direk Joey is the director of Eugene’s upcoming movie with Toni Gonzaga and Zanjoe Marudo, P’Wedding Tayo, P’Wedding Hindi.

Since they are also good friends, Eugene shared that Direk Joey is a good influence on her to improve her craft. “Hindi man niya sinasabi nang direkta, pinaparamdam niya sa akin ang pagiging mahusay na artista ay hindi pagiging sikat at natapos na lamang doon. Ito ay pangangalaga sa trabaho, pangangalaga sa sarili and always enjoy your job everyday.” She also cited how Direk Joey is abiding with this principle because he remains energetic and enthusiastic with his craft despite being in the business for so long. “Hindi siya tumatanda,” said Eugene.

Eugene—who recently had a string of successful movies—did not deny that she feels a little pressure about her upcoming movie. However, she also pointed out that success is relative and for her, having done a socially relevant movie is equally fulfilling. “There has to be a balance and we have to know the target audience and we are expecting ang buong pamilya ay papasok [to watch the movie]. This is not about just two persons involved but the whole family is involved. May anak, may manugang, biyenan, magulang. Sa Pilipino pa naman ang pamilya close na close.”

P’Wedding Tayo, P’Wedding Hindi tells the story of two women; one (portrayed by Eugene) who wants to get her marriage annulled while the other (played by Toni Gonzaga), can’t wait to get married to her fiancé.
