Derek Ramsay leads Ultimate Frisbee team to victory in Davao tournament

051211-derek1_main.jpgLast May 7 and 8, the Tiongko fields in Davao City were abuzz with excitement as the city held its first ever Daba-Dabaw Ultimate Frisbee Tournament as part of Davao’s Summerfest 2011. The 24 teams from all over the country including General Santos City, Iligan, and Manila joined the event. Derek Ramsay also accepted the invitation from event organizers and local government to participate in the tournament and he played for one of the province’s top local teams, Mulatto Davao. Because of previous engagements, the 31-year-old actor was not able to make it for the opening games, but caught up with his team in the afternoon after a quick flight from Manila.

All his games were well-attended by spectators and players alike as Derek gamely posed for pictures and signed autographs. The Fil-Brit actor even took time to teach some Davao children how to play by tossing the disc around with them on the sidelines while waiting for his next game. The Kapamilya actor, who has at one time or another been involved in sports like basketball, rugby, and table tennis, has become the poster boy for Ultimate Frisbee, a fast-paced, non-contact sport that requires speed, stamina, and agility. The game is a combination of American football, soccer, and basketball which is fast, dynamic, and fiercely competitive. Derek, who is a familiar face in the Ultimate scene, admitted he really enjoyed playing for a strong provincial team like Davao Mulatto. “Playing for Mulatto was an amazing experience. They are a very fast and athletic team. Many of their players have the potential to play for the national team,” he shared with Push.com.ph.

Derek’s team beat Manila-based team Roaches in a finals game which they dominated all the way. Derek was also included in the Mythical Seven which recognizes the top athletes in the pool. Former Ang TV talent Guila Alvarez-Bautista, who played for the Roaches along with her husband Ping won the Women’s MVP award. “The event was a major success. It’s great that Frisbee is growing and being supported in the Mindanao region,” Derek told Push.com.ph.

Aside from the Ultimate tournament, there was also a variety of side activities like wall-climbing and carnival games at the two-day event, which was supported by the DOT Region 11, Mulatto Outdoor Apparel, Seagull Beach Resort, Pressure Points Massage and Spa, FBTV and RL Fashion and Lifestyle and Hybrid Restobar in Davao City.
