042111-twitter-main.jpgPopular social networking sites like Twitter and Facebook have their downsides. There are instances when they become means in causing controversies, like the recent issue between Willie Revillame and celebrities who have had stated their disapproval of the controversial host’s supposed “exploitation” of a certain contestant in his show.

Though celebrities have found a way to voice out their opinions through these social networking sites, they also become susceptible to attack and hurtful comments from fans and detractors. Recently, some celebrities with active Twitter accounts were asked about how they deal with criticisms online.

Luis Manzano said that he has been an active user of social sites in cyberspace for many years and said that they have been helpful to him in having an active social life. “Andami kong nakilalang kaibigan through Pinoyexchange.com, and Twitter is another step para mapalapit ka sa mga sumusuporta sa ‘yo. It brings people closer, eh kahit nasa [United] States.” He confirmed that he sometimes uses these sites to rant and rave but he stressed that his main purpose is to use these sites to be close to his fans and friends.

On her part, Vina Morales said that she allows her friends to maintain her sites for her. “I just tell them this is my schedule. I’m so scared. It’s my friends [who tweet].” She explained that she is a very sensitive person and she does not want to post something that might offend or hurt someone’s feelings. “I’m very careful,” she said. “It’s better to lay low na lang.”

She also said that her younger sister Shaina Magdayao used to have a Twitter account which she eventually closed. “In this business mahirap ang may kaaway so kailangan peace kayong lahat,” advised Vina. “Kailangan maingat ka sa mga gagawin mo, sasabihin mo, itong business na ito, very sensitive ang lahat ng tao. Konting masabi mo lalaki na, so you really have to be careful.”

Just like other celebrities, Pokwang, who is active on Twitter, said that she makes use of the site to get in touch with her followers. “Para alam nila kung ano’ng mga kaganapan sa buhay ko bilang artista, bilang idol nila, ‘di ba?” She continued that she is saddened when there are followers who sometimes criticize celebrities for something that they posted. “Sa amin kung ayaw n’yo sa mga artista i-unfollow n’yo kami,” she justified. She added, “Ang pagbibigay ng opinyon kalayaan mo ‘yon pero ‘yung mumurahin mo kaming artista, hindi tama ‘yon. Hindi namin deserve ‘yon.”

For Jericho Rosales, aside from updating his fans, the actor said that he uses Twitter to send inspiring and encouriagng messages. “Minsan nangungulit lang ako,” he smiled. But he warned that users should be careful with what they post because the medium is also prone to misinterpretation.  “For example iba ‘yung emotions na nararamdaman ng tao and then mababasa n’ya ‘yon, e baka maging negative ang pagtanggap. So may kanya-kanyang lugar ‘yan. Ang Twitter very limited. You can’t explain yourself most of the time mami-misunderstood.”
