Aiko Melendez on ex-husband Jomari Yllana: 'Kung talagang kami, baka talagang kami'

041311-jomari_main.jpgAiko Melendez will be reunited with her ex-husband Jomari Yllana as they play husband and wife in the new ABS-CBN teleserye Atom. Following the story conference for Atom, Aiko revealed in an interview that Jomari was one of the reasons she immediately said yes to this project. “Sobrang excited ako umarte uli. Nung inoffer sa akin ito at nung nalaman kong si Jomari ang makakatrabaho ko mas lalo akong na-excite. Matagal na wala akong ginawang teleserye so nandun ‘yung kaba. But knowing that I’ll be working with someone I’m comfortable with, I know it’s going to be fun.”

Aiko and Jomari were married for three years until they broke up in 2003. They have a son named Andrei who is now twelve years old. Aiko admitted that when they first broke up, she and Jomari harbored anger for each other. But as time passed they learned to accept what happened, and to their surprise, they even became better friends. “Siyempre sa simula hindi kami okay. It took time. Kailangan muna naming paghilumin ang mga sugat. After some time lang kami nagsimulang mag-bonding. Ngayon masasabi ko na kahit dumating pa ang sampung Ondoy, wala nang makakasira sa friendship namin.”

The actress/politician talked about the numerous occasions when she desperately needed a friend and Jomari was there. “He practically knows everything about me. Umiiyak ako sa kanya. He’s always been my shoulder to cry on. Kahit inaaway ko siya, tatawagan po ‘yan ng alas tres ng madaling araw, sasabihin niya, ‘Bakit? Umi-emo ka na naman?’ ‘Yung friendship namin is tighter ngayon.”

Aiko and Jomari were sitting beside each other during the interview, and she wasn’t shy to admit in front of her ex-husband that she missed his company. “Kanina nung nakita ko siya, honestly, yes na-miss ko siya. Aaaaahhhhh! Ha ha ha! Please Joms, ‘wag kang ma-in love uli sa akin! Namumula ako! Sumi-sixteen years old uli ako! Please don’t break my heart again, aaaaahhhhh! Ha ha ha!

Aiko confessed that at times she would wonder why the connection between her and Jomari remained despite the bitter end of their marriage. The two are currently single at the moment, and when asked if their friendship serves as a sign the romance is about to be rekindled, Aiko answered, “Away-bati kami niyan. But at the end of the day, kami pa rin ang magkasama. Parang lagi kaming pinaglalapit ng tadhana. Lalo na ngayon pareho kaming single, ha ha ha! Kaya tuloy sabi ko, ‘wag na lang pilitin. Kung talagang kami, baka talagang kami. He doesn’t mind naman na I had a second husband na. And first love never dies, ha ha ha!

The two share a common excitement over Atom which will be a teleserye for children, and for sure their son Andrei, together with Aiko’s other child Marthena Jickain (her daughter with second husband, former model Martin Jickain) would have a great time watching them on the show. “Whenever Andrei is not busy with school, lalo na ngayong vacation na, nakakasama niya talaga ‘yung daddy niya. Marthena is also close with Jomari. Siguro kapag nag-air na itong Atom magugustuhan nilang dalawa. They can visit us sa set siguro paminsan minsan.”

They said that they also managed to make their son understand about their situation. Aiko explained, “Pinapaintindi namin sa kanya na Joms and I can still be the best parents for him kahit hindi kami magkasama. Ang maganda is hindi kami nagaaway. Kapag nagaway kasi kami ang magsa-suffer lang ang anak namin.”

Aiko was also amazed to find out that there are still fans who feel excited about them working together on screen. “Ang totoo, marami pa rin
