Phil Younghusband is rapidly recovering from his hamstring injury

040211-phil-main.jpgPhil Younghusband happily told Push.com.ph that he’s already recovering from the hamstring injury that he sustained during the Philippine Azkals’ game against Mongolia last March 15. “I started the therapy [last Wednesday]. So mga three weeks akong hindi pwedeng maglaro, puro pahinga lang. Okay naman yung therapy, hindi masakit. ngayon gumagaling na. We just heard na may draw kanina sa Asia, so yung next game natin is Sri Lanka on April 29, tapos may game dito sa Pilipinas on July 3. Yes, makakalaro na ako by then.”

The star striker really felt bad that he wasn’t able to join the team during the recent AFC Challenge Cup qualifying games in Myanmar. “Siyempre at the time, malungkot ako, disappointed ako, kasi gusto ko maglaro sa Myanmar. And kasi dito medyo nervous ako kasi I couldn’t do anything about the games, dito lang ako sa Twitter [nakakapag-update]. So medyo frustrating kasi walang TV coverage at hindi ko alam kung anong nangyayari sa Myanmar.”

Phil commended new Azkal Angel Guirado for his amazing performance during the game. Angel scored two goals in the match against Bangladesh. “Yes, magaling siya. [From the start] confident ako he can do the job. Matangkad siya, six foot three, matipuno siya, so he’s very good and I look forward to playing with him in the next game.”

He was also ecstatic that they would be advancing to the 2012 finals together with other football-playing countries like North Korea (World Cup qualifier), India (2008 champ), Tajikistan (2006 champ), Maldives, and Turkmenistan. “Siyempre masaya ako, sobrang proud ako sa kanila kasi nanalo kami sa Myanmar. Excited ako for next year kasi may championship and na-qualify na kami. I am looking forward to competing with North Korea siguro since pinakamalakas sila kasi they were in the World Cup.”

But more than the pressure on the Philippine Azkals to bring home victories from each of their tournaments, Phil is glad that his beloved sport has captured the hearts of many Filipinos. “The Philippines is just starting, the Azkals are just starting. It’s the first time in the history that we'll be playing in this competition. So for Philippines to be competing against those teams, it’s a big accomplishment already. Sobrang proud ako and privileged kasi dati hindi sikat, pero ngayon ang Azkals sikat na sikat. For me, sobrang proud ako and sana tuloy tuloy ang support sa football.”
