Jed Madela on rivalry with Marcelito Pomoy: 'Ang galing niya talaga, so okay lang'

During his press conference last October 14, he expressed how happy he was to be taking this huge step in his musical career. “People have been tagging me as a singer na puro revivals lang, wala pang hits. I only had one original song before, ‘Let Me Love You,’ in my first album. So I’m really grateful because this time I get to sing my own songs and not rely on the popularity of covers. I am hoping that my new songs will turn into something that people will really like.”

Jed also addressed issue of rivalry with Pilipinas Got Talent Season 2 winner Marcelito Pomoy, who supposedly beat his record for being a talented belter. “Before Marcelito came, pinaka-signature ko yung, ‘Uy si Jed, belter ‘yan’. Then here comes a guy who can sing high notes. But you know, listening to him is very different to listening to my singing voice. He sounds like Regine Velasquez, tapos ako naman I can hit high notes but it sounds like mine, it’s my voice talaga. So our style is completely different,” he explained.

Nevertheless, Jed has no problem being compared to Marcelito since he has a high regard for other talented performers. “People will always compare artists kahit hindi kayo magkapareho ng boses. Kapag magkapareho kayo ng genre magko-compare talaga yung tao. But to be compared to Marcelito, wala namang problema sa akin, magaling naman si Marcelito. Hanga ako sa kanya. I performed with him a couple of times. We did a show in Los Angeles two weeks ago. Ang galing niya talaga, so okay lang.”

Instead of feeling threatened with newcomers, Jed explained that he actually takes it as a challenge to improve his craft. “Siyempre hindi mo mapipigilan na mag-worry whenever there are newly discovered talents. But I don’t see it as a threat; it’s more of a wake up call not to be passive. It’s a reality that there are people more talented, people who are better than I am. You know, you have to use it in a positive way. Hindi mo naman pwedeng isipin na ‘ay may mas magaling sa akin ayoko na.’ Kailangan mas galingan mo pa para hindi ka maiiwan.

Jed’s latest album is a combination of stirring love songs (“Breathe Again,” “Larawan,” “Ikaw Na Lang Ang Kulang”); upbeat tracks (“I Have You Here,” “We’re Having A Party”); and timeless ballads (“Bukas Na Lang Kita Mamahalin,” “If Ever You’re In My Arms Again,” “Later”).
