Boy Abunda thanks his mom for motivating him to follow his dreams.
Boy Abunda has earned the title as King of Talk not only because all his talk shows have been successful over the years; but he’s also the type of host who has the capacity to be direct to the point when grilling a celebrity yet still remain empathetic to his subject. Simply put, he gets the job done without being ruthless—which is sometimes the case in the world of show business. Even President Noynoy Aquino considers him an icon for “his ability to communicate, to understand the audience, and to be able to advance a particular set of ideas.”
But the ever down-to-earth Boy credits his mom, “Nanay Lesing,” for encouraging him to be the best that he could possibly be even when he was growing up in Borangan City, Samar. He related that his mom, who’s now 81-years old, used to be a public school teacher who has deeply instilled in him the values of honesty, hard work, and fairness. “Being a teacher, Nanay emphasized the value of studying. I knew I needed to excel and that I just can’t be good, but I should be among the best.” Apparently, he never gave his mom any headaches even then. “Takot kasi ako mapalo noon,” Boy admitted with a laugh.
To date, Boy can be seen in top-rating TV shows such as Showbiz News Ngayon, The Buzz, and Bottomline. But despite his busy schedule, he makes sure that he constantly keeps in touch with Nanay Lesing who’s still based in their hometown in Samar. “Now, it’s my time to pay her back with kindness and be the one to take care of her.” To which Nanay Lesing replied, “Kampanteng nanay ako noon hanggang ngayon. Proud din ako dahil sinigurado ko talagang focused si Boy sa kanyang edukasyon. Natutuwa nga ako’t ang dami niya palang natutunan mula sa akin, lalo na sa pagpapahalaga ng pamilya at kalusugan, na siya namang nagbibigay inspirasyon sa mga sumusuporta sa kanya.”
