Is Charice discriminated against for being Asian?

Charice is one of the most successful Filipino artists to penetrate the Hollywood music industry. Her breathtaking performances never fail to receive standing ovations from audience all over the world. Even one of the most influential women in the world, Oprah Winfrey, is very vocal about how much she adores her.

Last month, Charice’s amazing resume just got cooler as she’s confirmed to join the cast of the award-winning FOX hit musical series, Glee on its second season. As if that’s not cool enough, she will even play the role of a foreign exchange student whose powerful vocal competes with that of New Direction’s lead star, Rachel Barry (played by Lea Michele).

Having a wide exposure with an international crowd, fans can’t help but wonder if she’s been discriminated against for being an Asian. Charice quickly denies such experiences. She says, “Hindi po ako nakaramdam ng ganun kasi for me, bakit ako makakaramdam ng ganun? I mean, I’m Asian. And kailangan ko ipakita sa’yo kung ano yung talent ng mga Asian. Hindi tayo karapat-dapat na lait-laitin. And siguro, pinakita lang rin nila na she’s Asian and she deserves to be on our show.”

With that kind of spirit, it’s no wonder Charice keeps making waves in the international scene.
