Richard Poon clarifies there's no competition between him and Piolo Pascual

Richard Poon, who is known for making standard songs popular once again, might be facing competition for his Big Band Crooner title from Piolo Pascual. The Ultimate Heartthrob has just released his album, Decades: The Greatest Songs of the ‘50s, ‘60s, and ‘70s, which a collection of his renditions of some of the well loved hits from the past.

Richard acknowledged that there might be some comparison between his music and Piolo’s, but he also clarified that there’s no deliberate competition between them. “PJ and I are good friends and pinaguusapan pa lang ‘yung album niya naikwento na niya sa akin. I told him that the album will be a good one kasi he will be singing slow songs. I think he’s okay with fast songs but it will be better if he concentrates on the slow songs because mas maganda ‘yung boses niya dun. I believe the best ballads are from the ‘50s, ‘60s, and ‘70s kaya perfect ‘yung concept ng album niya. I have so much respect for PJ not just as an actor but also as a singer. He’s a good friend. I welcome his latest music venture. I’ll definitely support his album.”

In fact, Richard composed a couple of songs for Piolo like “Paano Kita Iibigin” which was the title theme of Piolo’s movie with Regine Velasquez. This was also his way of returning the favor to Piolo. “I admire him for who he is especially when I joined ASAP kasi mas hasa na siya sa mga live performances dun sa show. Kaya kapag siya naman may kailangan, like tinatanong niya ako kung okay ‘yung song selection o ‘yung arrangement, I really help him. I’m happy to be able to give back kung ano ‘yung naitulong niya sa akin.”

Richard has a lot to be thankful for this 2009 for the opportunities and accolades that came his way. “I got a Platinum record award for my For You album. Sa Awit Awards nakakuha naman ako ng Best Jazz Recording for the song I wrote and produced for Charlie Green. Nakaka-overwhelm ‘yung mga nangyari sa career ko this year. Ngayong 2009 nabuo ‘yung grupo naming ASAP Sessionistas na ang daming naging fans. Nakapag-show kami sa five cities in the US and next year nakaplano na ‘yung show namin sa Europe.”

The ASAP sessionista also shared what his fans can expect from him this coming 2010. “Dapat may Christmas album ako this year kaya lang hindi umabot so next Christmas na lang. I’ll also be working on a third album. There will also be a live album na DVD format. Since I’m singing standard songs may makakasama akong big band para sa live album.”
