Piolo Pascual says he's already preparing for his role as the late Ninoy Aquino.
Piolo Pascual confirmed that he is preparing to portray the late Senator Benigno “Ninoy” Aquino Jr. for a special episode of Maalaala Mo Kaya. “We’re taping next week. Next year na ipapalabas. Hindi ko pa pwedeng sabihin kung sino ‘yung ibang cast. It will be directed by Jeffrey Jeturian,” Piolo said in an interview following the press launch of his newest album Decades under Star Records.
“Sa Dekada ’70 binasa ko ilang beses ‘yung libro. Dito sa gagawin kong MMK I’m reading a lot of research materials about the life of Ninoy, pinapanood ko ‘yung mga video interviews sa family, and other resources na ibinibigay ng ABS-CBN. Hinihingi ko lahat ng aids na makakatulong sa akin to be able to give justice to portraying Ninoy.” He said he is also planning to speak with Kris Aquino, the youngest daughter of Ninoy, to get some input. “Hindi pa kami nagkakausap ni Ms. Kris but I will definitely call her to ask for advice and tips. ‘Yung kwento kasi galing sa kanilang magkakapatid so sila talaga ‘yung nakakaalam.”
Although there are many who trust that Piolo is a good choice for the role, there are also those who question if the actor can give a believable portrayal. “Sobrang nakaka-pressure kasi napakalaki ng expectation ng mga tao. Noon pa lang marami na ang nagsasabi na kesyo hindi ko kamukha si Ninoy, that I’m not as eloquent as he was, na wala akong karapatan to portray him.” But Piolo would rather not dwell on these negative criticisms and instead prefers to focus on how he can deliver an impeccable performance. “I’ll just take them with a grain of salt. I’ll just do my best to come up with the best portrayal of Ninoy. Sa akin ipinagkatiwala itong project na ‘to so like always, I’ll prove na kaya ko.”
Piolo couldn’t still confirm anything about the Ninoy or Cory Aquino biopic planned by ABS-CBN. “Habang wala pang dumadating na kontrata sa akin to do a Ninoy biopic ito munang MMK ang pagtutuunan ko ng pansin. The show wants to pay tribute rin kay former President Cory. This is a big opportunity and at the same time a challenge for me to portray somebody who is hailed a hero of our generation.”
In the meantime, Piolo is enjoying being the “sexiest man in Philippine showbiz,” as proclaimed by Cinema One for its 15th anniversary awards. “Thank you? Hahaha! Wala akong masabi pero blessing pa rin ‘yan for me. Nakakataba ng puso kapag nabibigyan ka ng mga ganyang recognition. Pero kasi hindi ka pwedeng mag-dwell lang sa mga ganyan. Tanggapin mo lang and be happy kasi may mga taong naniniwala.”
When asked if he agrees that he is sexy, Piolo immediately answered, “Oo!” which he followed with a big laugh.
