Parokya Ni Edgar’s front man Chito Miranda didn’t mince words when asked about the real score between him and former Star Circle Quest finalist Neri Naig. “Yeah, we’re going out now, girlfriend ko siya. I’d like to think it’s official since December,” he said during the press launch of the Tokyo-based fashion brand Uniqlo held at the InterContinental Hotel, Thursday, May 16.
Photos of the couple during their recent vacation with friends in Bataan can be seen online. The two looked sweet and very much in love with each other. Chito, however, refused to give details about how their relationship came about. “Huwag na natin pagusapan kasi corny magusap ng love life sa [harap ng] camera e. It’s not that it’s a personal thing, pero corny kapag dini-discuss mo ang love life sa camera.”
As far as the public knows, Chito haven’t had any serious relationship since his breakup with longtime girlfriend Kaye Abad two years ago. But Chito was quick to say that he and Kaye remain on good terms with each other. “Well, baka delayed na ito pero birthday niya actually [last May 17]. We’re good friends.”
In the meantime, the press also asked Chito if he supports American Idol finalist Jessica Sanchez in her bid to win the singing competition. While he admires her undeniable talent, he revealed that his favorite is actually Phillip Phillips whom he likened to respected musician Dave Matthews. “Ay nako, idol! Sobrang Pinoy pride [ang dala ni Jessica)! Pero mas crush ko si Phil. Actually, okay talaga sa akin si Jessica Sanchez [na manalo] para sa American Idol. Pero mas gusto ko talagang pinapanood si Phil. So kahit second or third placer siya it doesn’t matter. Hindi niya kailangan manalo sa competition to be where he is as an artist. Pero si Jessica, unbelievable talent!”
When told that Jessica’s avid fans might object to his choice of contender, Chito explained that it’s all a matter of his preference in music. “Kanya-kanyang opinion naman ‘yan e. Sobrang bilib ako kay Jessica. Pero just like our music, mas gusto kong manood ng Urbandub or Rico Blanco kaysa kay Sarah Geronimo, pero mahal na mahal ko si Sarah. So yung mga magagalit sa akin na Jessica Sanchez fans, sila yung hindi nag-a-accept ng opinion ng iba. I love Jessica Sanchez. Sobrang overwhelming talaga yung talent [at] pwede siya manalo. Si Phil ‘di na niya kailangan manalo kasi artist naman talaga siya more than anything.”
On a different note, Chito revealed why Parokya Ni Edgar remains one of the top music icons in the country. “Because our band, it’s not about trends. Wala kaming image na pino-portray. We’re very carefree. We don’t care what’s cool sa mundo. [Maybe we are perceived as a cool band by our fans] because we don’t try to be cool.”
He was also happy to announce that they’ll be coming out with a new album, Inuman Session Volume 2, very soon. “Kakatapos lang namin mag-record. Hopefully lumabas na agad. Sa lahat ng mga naka-miss sa amin, thank you for voting for us sa MYX at sa Awit Awards. Kung na-miss niyo kami, sana ma-miss niyo kami palagi para panalo kami palagi,” he exclaimed with a laugh.
