All set to portray Jennifer La Peña in the upcoming teleserye Mundo Man Ay Magunaw, Nikki Gil admitted she is excited about playing a character that is far removed from her personality in real life. “Yung first reaction ko is kaya ko ba ito? I’ve never done it before. It’s something very new. Even in real life, my friends can attest to the fact that they’ve never seen me in any catfight or whatever but I realize that it’s what I’ve been waiting for. It’s what I’ve always wanted to do, to do roles that are medyo offbeat. So siyempre hindi pinalalagpas ang mga ganyang pagkakataon,” she shared.
The singer-actress also said that she wouldn’t mind if people start getting mad at her character for being so mean to the character played by Empress in the series. “Sa tingin ko, you are only really an effective kontrabida kapag talagang kinamuhian ka ng mga tao so yun ang pinagdadasal ko na mangyari. Na kamuhian ako ng tao (laughs),” she said.
Nikki said she wouldn’t be particular about playing good or bad characters just like her more experienced cast mate Eula Valdez. “I really don’t mind doing any of them. They’re equally challenging. In terms of emotions, they’re both equally draining. Pareho lang naman silang nakakapagod. Pareho ka rin naman ng binibigay na emotional investment na inilalagay dun so depende lang din, siguro ang sarap lang ng buhay ni Ms. Eula Valdez na every once in a while she gets to play kontrabida and then minsan mabait,” she explained.
Known as a devout Christian, Nikki admitted she had to do a lot of research in order to play her role more effectively. “Tinandaan ko lang yung mga pelikulang talagang na-affect ako dun sa mga kontrabida. Madami akong siyempre pinanuod kasi what experience I lacked doing teleseryes—because I do it very rarely—I make up for in research so siyempre pinanuod ko yung original na Mundo Man Ay Magunaw so I understand the background. Tapos yung mga movies na talagang naapektuhan ako pinanuod ko ulit,” she said.
The 24-year-old morena beauty also admitted that she refrained from using any exact character peg for her role. “Wala naman. Parang mahirap mag-peg eh. Sabi ni Ms. Tessie Tomas pag nag-peg ka, hindi na ikaw yun, hindi mo na sariling creation yun. Kokopyahin mo lang yung nuances ng mga iba. So it’s really just me learning as much as I can and then tingnan natin kung anong kalalabasan,” she said.
Although her character Jennifer tries to make life hard for Sheryle, the character played by Empress, Nikki said that she can still relate to her onscreen persona in a small way. “In real life, nakaka-relate ako sa isang aspeto ng character ko. Si Jennifer La Peña kasi behind the kontrabida façade, ano siya eh, insecure na gusto niya patunayan that she’s worth her lola’s affirmation or acceptance. So siyempre lahat naman tayo dito sa industriya we long for acceptance, we long for affirmation, we long na masabihan tayo na, ‘Yes, you’re doing a good thing, you’re on the right track.’ So siguro sa isang banda dun ako nakaka-relate,” she explained.
